Learn More About Torrey Pines’ Fascinating History

Like the U.S. Open, Torrey Pines Golf Course has an intriguing history of its own. Now a major landmark of San Diego, California, the tract of land was originally a World War II military training center. In 1956, William F. Bell took 100 acres of Camp Callan and built the North and South golf courses. Bell orchestrated the views that Torrey Pines is famous for today; Rees Jones lengthened the course and increased its difficulty in 1999 to make it tournament-ready.

Torrey Pines was named after a special pine tree only found on the golf courses, in a neighboring state reserve and on Santa Rosa Island; however, the trees found in San Diego and those found just south of Santa Barbara are a different subspecies, making the courses’ trees even rarer. Discovered by Dr. Charles Parry in 1850 and named after his mentor Dr. John Torrey, these pine trees are characterized by their five pine needles and rugged looks. The Torrey pines’ growth (and endangered existence) occurs under continual drought, sandy soil, high winds and scorching sun.
